Social Networking
In today's modern society social networking is a very hot
topic which splits the people either liking this technology or disliking it. Many
people believe that it's an incredible tool and progressive way towards the
future, but others are worried about the impact it has on people's lives and its
undiscovered potentials. It's a very interesting problem, since people from all
walks of life use social media sites for both work and pleasure. Like any other
technology social networking also contains both sides' negatives and Positives.
For example privacy, by not setting your privacy settings
properly one can have some serious consequences. Now a days in school Cyberbullying
became a problem as people can take advantage of the fact that there is no one
who can effectively stop the bullying when it happens. It proof to be a big waste
of time, as people visit social networking sites to check one thing but being end
up spending more time as a result of targeted advisements and not being as much
productive. On the other hand, it provides people with the medium where one person
can express himself, can share his feelings and entertain himself after a busy life
routine or if a person wanted a way to escape for a bit. It also makes it a lot
easier to make new friends and increase your circle also its very effective
tool to keep in touch with family and distant relative, especially if they live
in another country.
Social networking site like LinkedIn is a great example for
many corporations using a single social networking site to recruit new talent
for their firms. In the reading "Social
Networking Technology Boosts Job Recruiting" Maureen Crawford said "Social networking technology is absolutely the best thing to
happen to recruiting — ever." In addition, corporations and other businesses use social networking to benefit
themselves and consumers. Brands through Facebook can quickly find out which of
their products people recommending to others. It also provides benefits for the
consumer since they receive special promotions, product information, technical support,
and customer service.
Social networking is proving to be an essential part of the
economy. Since networking companies have created a new major industry for GDP and
thousands of jobs. In a research "McKinsey
Global Institute study" projected that the "communication and collaboration from social media added between
$900 billion and $1.3 trillion to the economy through added productivity and
improved customer service." Social media sites also benefiting the
society by empowering individuals to make social change and do social good on a
community level. For example, in the New York Times article "In India, Using Facebook to Catch
Scofflaw Drivers" it was mentioned by Heather Timmons that " The traffic police started a Facebook
page two months ago………………………………….. 3,000 photographs and dozens of videos."
I think in the future these social networking sites will
evolve by limiting its negative impacts like more privacy protection and more
refined user interface for people to encourage them to participate more. Also,
it will definitely try to reach more people in less time.
